King Kekaulike High School is located in Upcountry area of Maui, Hawaii on the slopes of Haleakala. It opened its doors in September of 1995. The campus is spread over 50 acres with students coming from neighboring communities of Ha'iku, Kula, Pa'ia, Makawao and Pukalani. The Kekaulike Complex consists of 1 high school, 1 intermediate school, and 5 elementary schools.
Kekaulike High School currently provides a comprehensive academic program including services and programs for English Language Learners, Special Education/504 students, and students who are at risk of failure. Beyond the core academic courses, the school also provides 16 Advanced Placement Courses, Career and Technology Education (CTE) pathways, Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID), and biweekly Advisory classes. A range of co-curricular activities and athletics is offered. A Hawaiian Language Immersion Program was launched in 1997, and every Hawaiian Immersion Senior Class participates in both the Kula Kaiapuni O Maui graduation as well as the traditional school commencement ceremony. Every senior is required to submit a Senior Project by producing a research paper, a related product, and a culminating portfolio, which is orally presented before a panel of community and school judges.
The school’s vision: “Majestically, on the slopes of Haleakala, King Kekaulike High School strives in unity for excellence in living (Respectfully), learning (Rigor), and leading (Relevancy) to enrich, empower, and elevate our students, our community, and our world.” and the school’s motto: “Kulia I Ka Nu`u” - Strive for the Summit using our Na Ali`i Three Rs:Respect, Rigor and Relevancy are tied to the General Learner Outcomes and the Na Hopena A`o, the Department of Education’s Hawaiian culturally-based values that will strengthen every student on their learning journey.
